YOUNG people are custodians of the country’s future and must, therefore, desist from drug and substance abuse to safeguard Zimbabwe’s sovereignty.

This was said by ZANU PF Harare Province Youth League chairperson Cde Emmanuel Mahachi, who was addressing hundreds of party youths during a provincial meeting held yesterday ahead of Tuesday’s commemorations of the Robert Gabriel Mugabe National Youth Day.

Cde Mahachi called on youths to work with Government to fight the scourge of drug abuse.

“As the Youth League leadership, we strongly denounce drug and substance abuse by the youths in our communities,” he said.

“We do not condone the use of illicit drugs or even the selling of drugs.

“If you find yourself engaged in such activities, then you cease to be a party member and should not, in any way, affiliate yourself with the ruling party because we do not do that here.

“As the party youth, you should assist Government as it makes efforts to combat this vice, which is destroying our communities.”

As the country’s largest demographic, Cde Mahachi said, youths had a critical role to play in nation-building and development.

He said the party was currently undertaking projects geared towards improving young people’s livelihoods.

“I am sure you are all aware that the President gave us 60 cattle (heifers) and I am happy to inform you that the herd has since grown to 140, which we are rearing on a farm we were given in Mashonaland East after we had asked them to assist us with land.

“We hope to distribute the cattle to each district once they have multiplied a bit more,” he said.

“We were also recently given 15 000 chicks, which we will collect soon so that the youth can earn a living.”

Meanwhile, Cde Mahachi also addressed students at the Zimbabwe Open University on Friday, where he encouraged them to register to vote. He told the students that the ruling party’s provincial Youth League was inviting young people who had sound business ideas and projects to apply for financial assistance. – Sunday Mail
