On this day in 2013, national hero Cde George Mayowe died.
He was 60
Cde Mayowe whose Chimurenga name was Robert Mandebvu was amongst a group of five who selflessly gave up their University studies to fight Rhodesian injustice.

Born on April 16, 1952 to George Mayowe and Esinah Makombe. He did his primary school at St. Anthony Primary School in Zaka before proceeding to Highfield High School and Harare High School for his secondary education.
Agitated by the assassination of Chairman Chitepo, Cde Mayowe together with Cdes Chris Mutsvangwa, Sobusa Gula-Ndebele, Masimba Mwazha and Cde Willard Panyika Hapana Zororo Duri were the first big group of University students to leave their studies and join the liberation struggle in Mozambique
Cde Mayowe did his military training at Tembwe Military Training Camp where he met his wife Tendai Mheta who was part of the medical corps.
Cde Mandebvu was sent to lead the political research department and soon after became Director of Chitepo College of Party Ideological Instruction.
