The Sudanese government has condemned the attack and looting of Zimbabwe’s Ambassador, Emmanuel Runganga Gumbo’s residence and its embassy offices in the ongoing fighting in that country. Sudan has since April, been gripped by an armed conflict between the country’s regular army and a paramilitary force, the Rapid Support Forces. In a statement yesterday, Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs slammed the attack on Zimbabwe’s properties and called on the international community to also speak out against the “criminal behaviour.”

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemns in the strongest terms the rapid support militia’s storming of the embassy and the home of the Zimbabwean ambassador, and the theft of valuables, in flagrant violation of international norms and laws concerned with the sanctity and protection of the headquarters and property of diplomatic missions. “The Ministry calls on the international community to condemn the terrorist and criminal behaviour of the militia,” the Ministry said in the statement. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade spokesperson, Mr Livit Mugejo said some of the individuals in the fighting were taking advantage of the conflict to loot properties. “I can confirm that our properties in Sudan were destroyed by some of the fighting forces in the country taking advantage that we have evacuated our people and taking advantage of the current war going on there. “It’s not only Zimbabwe (whose properties have been destroyed) but we have heard that most of the other countries have been targeted. Its sheer criminality, taking advantage of the war to loot properties of our diplomats and the property of our embassy there. When the conflict broke out in April, Zimbabwe evacuated over 100 of its citizens that were resident in the country including embassy staff. – The Herald
