Harare- The government is set to award its workers a salary increment this quarter, in keeping with its promise to continuously review the conditions of service for its employees, a Cabinet Minister has said.
Parties to the National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC), the government and worker representative unions are set to meet on Thursday to map the way forward regarding the matter.
“We wish to advise members of the public service that parties to the National Joint Negotiating Council are currently finalising position papers for tabling in council for consideration,” Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Paul Mavima said.
“This round of negotiations is in line with government’s commitment that a review will be done in the first quarter of 2023.”
The meeting follows threats by the government workers to escalate their grievances to President Emmerson Mnangagwa after what they termed fruitless attempts to engage the responsible Minister over the past few weeks.
Workers have been agitating for a pay rise of up to USD 800, but the government has said it has insufficient resources to pay salaries in USD only.
Currently, government pays its workers a hybrid salary comprising of USD200 across the board and varying amounts in local currency according to grades.
Last year, the government announced that it was bringing back the long abandoned advancement policy which rewards workers according to additional education qualifications they would have attained after joining the civil service.
On top of that, the government is working on a raft of non monetary benefits set to accrue to the government workers.
Some of the benefits already being enjoyed by civil servants include subsidised transport to and from work, duty free importation of cars for qualifying workers, among other benefits.
The government is also rolling out affordable housing for its workers.
