BULAWAYO Polytechnic has outlawed the wearing of ripped jeans, tops that expose the stomach, string tops, sleeveless and off-shoulder tops among other forms of dressing.
In a notice to students, the institution said the banned clothing should not be worn on its campus or any of its functions outside the polytechnic’s grounds.
Added to the list of banned forms of clothing are tops and dresses that reveal cleavages and back, biker and bum shorts; skin tights and other tight-fitting clothes; see-through clothes and skirts; shorts and dresses that are more than five centimetres above the knees.
The Polytechnic also banned the wearing of caps in class and offices while male students are not allowed to wear any headgear except on religious grounds.
Bulawayo Polytechnic Principal, Mrs Chiedza Masanganise said the students’ dress code was in line with the institution’s mandate to train and groom professionals for commerce and industry.
“The institution’s mandate is to train and groom professionals for commerce and industry,” she said.
She said if the students are not properly dressed, they will be asked to “correct the dress code” before being allowed to access Bulawayo Polytechnic facilities and lectures.
Mrs Masanganise said students must dress according to their trade.
