ASPIRING Zanu PF candidates that are already campaigning before announcement of primary election dates face disciplinary action for causing unnecessary divisions and anxiety in the party, an official has said.
Bindura District Coordinating committee chairperson, Cde Lucas Chigede, warned those that have started canvassing for nominations to stop or risk being punished.
This came as Mashonaland Central Province has started the cell verification process.
Speaking at an inter-district meeting at Chipadze High School in Bindura on Thursday, Cde Chigede said it was not yet time for campaigning.
He said those caught on the wrong side of the party constitution will be disqualified.
“It is not a crime to desire a position, but keep it in your heart and wait for the right time,” he said. “Please don’t disturb the sitting Members of Parliament, councillors, and senators. Their terms of office are not yet over.
“People with interests should not spearhead the creation of cells. Those who have interests, declare them and step aside. We need people with one interest, that of President Mnangagwa as our presidential candidate.
“People with interests have a danger of registering people who support them and leaving out others. This is not how the party operates.”
Cde Chigede said the objective of the meeting was to advise people that the term of office of cells had expired and there was need for new ones, which was an annual exercise.
He said the cells were the entry point into the party, and everyone, including the President, started from the cell level.
Politburo member Cde Monica Mavhunga said the meeting was convened to remind each other that cells were important to the party.
“We emphasised the issue of unity because hatred will not take us anywhere. We want to grow the party,” said Cde Mavhunga.
She said the meeting talked about the need for the province to take up programmes such as Pfumvudza/Intwasa to ensure food security.
“Zimbabwe is for us and it’s only us who can build it,” said Cde Mavhunga.
Mashonaland Central is hosting this year’s independence celebrations, and Cde Mavhunga, who is also the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, said preparations were going on well.
The celebrations will be held at Chipadze Stadium. – The Herald
