UPGRADING of Murehwa-Macheke Road is set to resume after the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development re-tendered the project.

The upgrade includes surfacing and widening that will ensure the road is user friendly to motorists and commuters who use the stretch daily.

Upgrading of this road started in 2019 and now Government is keen to complete it for the benefit of the local communities who are also appealing for the road works to be expedited.

Mr Tineyi Mambo from Chinake village in Murehwa said the road will ease the burden facing farmers carrying their farm produce to markets.

“There are a lot of farmers who use this road and its upgrading will bring a major relief to them particularly when transporting their farm products to markets,” he said.

“It is our hope that the Government will ensure this road is upgraded and serve our farmers. We thank Government for this project. We are sure that upgrading which has been stalled will resume soon.”

Ms Glender Dambudzo from Chinake village and a vendor at Murehwa centre said Government was doing a wonderful job in upgrading Murewa-Macheke road.

“It will be less expensive for us to transport our goods for sale once this road is surfaced,” he said. “As of now, transporters are asking for exorbitant fees if we hire them citing the state of the road. We are appealing to Government to ensure work is resumed.

“We have a lot of farmers here who use this road. And as you can see, this is the shortest route to Macheke from Murehwa and even Mutoko. During rainy seasons, we struggle to use it.”

Mashonaland East Provincial Roads Engineer Mrs Martha Ndoro confirmed to The Herald yesterday that the project had been re-tendered.

“We are re-tendering the project, the first one was not successful,” she said. – The Herald
