ARMED robbers got away with gold worth more than US$400 000 and firearms in a dramatic robbery in Bulawayo on Tuesday morning.
The 13 suspected robbers intercepted a security company that was transporting gold worth more than US$400 000 belonging to mining giant How Mine.
“The ZRP is investigating an armed robbery case that occurred at the 21km peg along Bulawayo-How Mine Road on 04/10/2022 at around 0730 hours.
“A security company which was conducting cash in transit involving gold from How Mine was attacked by thirteen criminals who were using three cars, a Nissan NP300 registration number HR30XJGP, Toyota Hilux GD6, and a Nissan March,” said the police in a statement.
The robbers, police said, disarmed the security guards and stole four firearms (two 303 rifles and two pistols) and 11,9kgs of gold.
“More information will be released as investigations unfold,” said the police.
Witnesses said the robbers and guards from the security company exchanged gun fire before the robbery took place.
Meanwhile, a Kwekwe magistrate has sentenced two armed robbers to five years in jail.
John Nyirenda and Munashe Ruvhevhe were part of a gang of four armed robbers that terrorised Kwekwe residents and robbed them with cash and valuables.
Two of the gang members are still at large.
