THREE people have drowned in Harare and Chitungwiza in separate incidents, with the authorities urging people not to cross rivers in flood or swim in dams, especially during this rainy season.

In one of the incidents, a man is reported to have drowned under unclear circumstances over the weekend after he had gone to a dam in Chitungwiza while in the company of a female friend on Saturday.

The man’s decomposing body was recovered on Tuesday while floating in the dam.

In a video that has been circulating, a man could be seen dragging the body with a yellow rope.

Police yesterday said they were still in the process to get the details and to ascertain what transpired. Meanwhile, a Form Three student at a college in Chitungwiza drowned on Sunday after falling into Harava dam at the confluence of Ruwa and Manyame rivers on the Harare-Chitungwiza border.

The incident occurred during midday and the student has been identified as Nyasha Chirimamhunga (18).

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza said Chirimamhunga was in the company of his friends, two of them aged 16, while the other one was aged 17 when they went to Harava Dam near Mhonda village to see the lake.

“On reaching the dam wall, Nyasha Chirimamhunga removed his clothes and went on to sit on a rock near the dam wall. Whilst sitting on the rock he fell into the dam,” he said.

“He submerged below the water and was not located thereafter. An informant sought assistance from a passerby and they failed to locate him. The informant then made a report at ZRP Zengeza at around 9pm.”

The scene was attended by Zengeza Police who advised the ZRP Sub Aqua Unit before a police guard was placed at the scene.

Police in Harare are also appealing for information which may assist in identifying the body of man who drowned in Epworth Quarry.

The body of the victim was found floating in the quarry on February 7, 2023.

Anyone with information that might assist with investigations can contact any nearest police station. – The Herald
