TWO Bulawayo men were arrested after they broke into a church building and stole a deep freezer, refrigerator, blanket, mattress and eight décor curtains, police confirmed yesterday.

Collet Nyathi (50) and Moses Ncube (58) both from Nkulumane suburb allegedly broke into the Church of Christ premises last Friday at around 4am.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said the suspects were arrested following a tip-off from members of the public who spotted the them taking the loot into their house.

“The pastor said he left the church building locked and was shocked to wake up in the morning and found some church property missing. The suspects broke into the church during the wee hours of the morning,” he said.

They took a Defy deep freezer, a blanket and a queen-size mattress among other goods.

Insp Ncube said upon seeing the suspects transporting the stolen property, alert members of the public contacted the police.

“We would like to thank members of the public who contacted the police after they identified the stolen property. We would also like to urge members of the public to continue assisting the police to fight crime,” he said.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said the suspects were arrested following a tip-off from members of the public who spotted the them taking the loot into their house.

In February, armed robbers struck at Revelation Church of God in Bulawayo, beating up a pastor and two congregants before getting away with R20 000, US$300 and $10 000.

The five robbers, who were allegedly armed with axes, bolt cutters and a metal rod, struck early in the morning.

Pastor Wamchilano Ncube, was attacked alongside his congregants while they were asleep in the church premises.

The robbers reportedly had information that the church authorities had collected some money.

During the same month, the Roman Catholic Church’s St Andrew’s Parish in Kingsdale, Bulawayo, was forced to suspend services after thieves stole sacred vessels used to conduct mass. – The Chronicle
