Harare- At a time when the country’s capital has been reduced to an eyesore due to mounds of uncollected rubbish, the Harare City Council has seen it fit to instead sink money into the installation of WiFi at houses of the city’s 46 ward councillors.
The shocking development also comes as the city fathers are failing to provide basic services including water, and cutting overgrown grass citing lack of funding.
What is more astounding is how money for service provision always seems unavailable, but is found whenever there arises a need to pamper and fund the luxurious lifestyles of the Jacob Mafume led council.
The latest move by the city fathers is expected to drain thousands of United States Dollars from the City’s coffers, at a time when service provision is at an all time low.
The Harare Residents Trust (HRT) slammed the decision by council, saying it was a waste of rate payer’s money.
“This is at a time the City of Harare is dismally failing to deliver services to the residents of Harare,” it said.
“The City of Harare Councillors and officials are not getting tired of wasteful spending while neglecting service delivery issues affecting the residents of Harare.
“Is it possible that officials are taking advantage of unemployed councillors who wish to make as much money as possible before their terms of office come to an end? A majority of them have to benefit from council resources which they have lived on.”
According to HRT, Councillors also have an option to receive the equivalent amount of money in their bank accounts, if they cannot be connected.
