A Zimbabwean delegation led by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Dr Frederick Shava is in Windhoek Namibia for a SADC extraordinary meeting of the Ministerial Committee of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation scheduled for today.

Dr Shava is accompanied by Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Kazembe Kazembe and senior Government officials.

The ministerial committee will discuss, among other issues, the political and security situation in the region and the strengthening of democratic processes and the rule of law in member states.

In a statement yesterday, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeperson Mr Livit Mugejo said the meeting would also cover the progress report of the SADC Mission to Mozambique (SAMIM).

Mozambique is under threat from an insurgency in its northern Cabo Delgado province.

In an earlier statement, the SADC secretariat said Deputy Namibian Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah would preside over the meeting in her capacity as chairperson of the SADC ministerial committee.

The Ministerial Committee of the Organ was preceded by the meeting of senior officials yesterday.

The SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation is responsible for promoting peace and security in the SADC region.

It is mandated to steer and provide member states with direction regarding matters that threaten peace, security and stability in the region.

The organ’s objective is to promote peace and security in the region in line with Article 2 of the SADC Protocol on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.

The ministerial committee continues to play a critical role in combating acts of terrorism and violent extremism in Southern Africa, the latest being the deployment of a standby force to some districts of Cabo Delgado province in Mozambique. – The Herald
