THE Council of Churches in Africa (CCA) has commended Zanu-PF for endorsing President Mnangagwa as the ruling party’s candidate for next year’s harmonised elections.
Following President Mnangagwa’s ascendancy to power various infrastructural projects that had stalled are being implemented.
Roads, dams and irrigation projects among others are being undertaken across the country.
Zanu- PF last month held its 7th National People’s Congress and President Mnangagwa was endorsed as the party’s President and First Secretary.
Speaking during the closing ceremony of a three-day CCA conference on leadership, CCA president and founder Archbishop Dr Rocky Moyo said President Mnangagwa’s endorsement as the leader of the ruling party Zanu- PF was well deserved.
“The CCA observes that the 7th National People’s Congress was conducted professionally and its proceedings went on smoothly. Notably and most importantly the National People’s Congress re-elected Cde Dr E D Mnangagwa as President and First Secretary of Zanu-PF for the next five years. It also endorsed him as the sole Presidential candidate in the forthcoming harmonised general elections in 2023,” said Dr Moyo.
“The CCA extends its congratulations to His Excellency Cde Dr E D Mnangagwa for a deserved re-election as the leader of the party. We look forward to a bright future under his leadership and trust that His Excellency will see through most of his plans and projects during the tenure of his office.”
He said President Mnangagwa should be supported because he is implementing programmes to uplift communities.
Dr Moyo said transforming the country into an upper middle-income economy by 2030 is achievable if everyone rallies behind President Mnangagwa’s vision.
“CCA pledges to work with those in power in line with the celebrated biblical position that calls on the church to respect and work with the authorities in power,” said Dr Moyo.
Women Affairs, Community and Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Dr Sithembiso Nyoni, attended the conference.
The minister urged pastors to lead by example.
She challenged churches to complement Government’s efforts to develop communities.
Dr Nyoni who was the guest speaker said churches have a role to play in national building considering that the country is highly religious.
She said churches should help the country to fulfil President Mnangagwa’s vision of an upper-middle income society by 2030.
“Our President is always advocating for unity, equality and togetherness. For the country to develop, there is a need for participation churches an other stakeholders to complement Government efforts to improve the people’s welfare. Unity, peace and equality will not start from the streets but from teachings that youths and children get from churches hence we expect you as church leaders to lead by example,” said Dr Nyoni.
She said future generations are dependent on what they are taught today.
Dr Nyoni said it is disheartening that a lot of youths are being consumed by dangerous drugs.
“As we look into society, we realise that most of our youths are now hooked to drug and substance abuse instead of following biblical teachings of uprightness. We need to work together to assist the youths,” said Dr Nyoni.
CCA Women’s president Mrs Faith Sibanda Moyo commended Government for its inclusive approach to development.
“We recognise and appreciate strides towards the inclusion and equality in society being implemented by the Government. We have seen in the past women being left behind but this time Government is ensuring no one is left behind,” said Mrs Moyo.
She said Government must continue implementing more programmes to empower women. – The Chronicle
